🎣 Cape Coral & Matlacha Fishing Report – This Week Fishing in Cape Coral and Matlacha has been strong this week with solid action across the inshore waters, especially during the moving tides.  Snook continue to be a top target. Fish are holding tight to mangrove shorelines, docks, and creek mouths, particularly early in the morning and again late afternoon. Live pilchards and whitebait have been producing the best results, while artificial anglers are finding success with soft plastic paddletails and jerk shads worked slowly along structure.  Redfish have been cruising the flats and potholes around Matlacha Pass. Look for schools pushing water during lower tides. Gold spoons, soft plastics, and live shrimp fished under a popping cork have all been effective. Patience and quiet approaches are key right now.  Seatrout action has been steady, with good numbers coming from grass flats in 3–5 feet of water. Trout are responding well to live shrimp, as well as soft plastics bounced along the bottom during moving water.  Sheepshead are still hanging around structure, docks, and oyster bars. The trouble we encountered with dolphins eating your catch while fishing in the Cayo Casta area. Dolphins are highly intelligent and curious creatures that are attracted to fishing activities and fish in the water. While frustrating, it's important to remember that dolphins are protected marine mammals and pursue fish’s natural behavior. To mitigate this issue and increase your chances of successfully landing your catch, here are a few suggestions:  1. Change fishing location: Dolphins are known to frequent certain areas, so try moving to a different spot where their presence may be less common. 2. Use deterrent devices: Commercial deterrent devices are available, such as underwater noisemakers or electronic repellents, that emit sounds dolphins find unpleasant. These devices may help deter them from approaching your fishing area.   3. Stay vigilant: Keep a close eye on your fishing lines and immediately reel them in as soon as you notice dolphins approaching. Minimizing the time your catch spends in the water can reduce the chances of dolphins intercepting it. It's important to note that dolphins are protected species, and it is illegal to harm or harass them. While it can be challenging to fish in areas with high dolphin activity, respecting and coexisting with these beautiful creatures is essential. Enjoying nature's wonders while minimizing any negative impact is the best approach. 

Spoons can produce fish in various conditions, but it shines in some situations. Along weed lines, mangroves or similar structures should be your first targets, as this is where redfish congregate. Remember, reds travel in groups, so work an area thoroughly for consistent action. Repeated casts to the exact location or the same retrieval path will often produce multiple fish. Gold spoons are best suited for stained or dark water. The same techniques can be used with a silver spoon in cleaner water. The shape of the spoon and hook guard combine to allow the lure to bounce off obstructions like weeds, mangroves, oyster beds, or rocks where other lures might be lost. Erratic action is the key to the spoon’s success. Many anglers cast and pause, allowing the spoon to flutter. If you do not get a hit right off the bat, you have two options for the retrieve. A steady retrieve, varying speed based on conditions, will often draw fish out and even right to the boat. Others prefer to add a twitch to their retrieve, feeling the motion increases. Try or mix it up based on what the fish respond to.

As a full-time charter fishing guide in SWFL, I understand the challenges of choosing which species to pursue when there are so many options. The three main species, redfish, snook, and trout, can be easy to get stuck on, but branching out to other game fish like Spanish mackerel, cobra, and triple tail can make for a rewarding trip. Additionally, there are many opportunities to catch sharks in the harbor, such as black tips, spinner, and bonnet heads. These species can be found in both shallow flats and deeper waters. Diversifying our target species can offer my clients a unique and exciting fishing experience. Researching the different species, their habits, and preferred habitats is important to increase your chances of success. It can also be helpful to vary your fishing techniques and equipment to target different species better. Remember, fishing is not just about catching the most fish but also enjoying the experience and the challenge of targeting different species. Boca Grande Pass is known as the Tarpon Capital of the World for several reasons. The #1 reason they are here in such great numbers during the months of May and June is the Hill Tides. The action is steady daily during these months as crabs flush out from the Peace River and Charlotte Harbor to thousands of hungry migratory tarpon. The hill tides are the strongest by far, and crabs blanket the entire pass as they get flushed out to sea. The tarpon goes into a frenzy, smashing crabs on the surface in a fantastic display of nature. If you can fish during these specific dates, your chances of hooking into a silver king are much higher.

The New Jersey Boys had a successful day out on the water! Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and spotted sea trout are all highly sought-after catches and can make for a delicious meal when appropriately prepared. It was also great the weather was favorable, as that can significantly enhance the overall fishing experience.

Good friends on spring break from Ohio had a good time today. They did an excellent job never fished for sea trout and sheepshead. It was a rewarding and exciting experience for the girls.
