They are a bit lethargic due to the temp drop, so slow down your presentation.<div> </div>

🎣 Cape Coral & Matlacha Fishing Report – This Week Fishing in Cape Coral and Matlacha has been strong this week with solid action across the inshore waters, especially during the moving tides.  Snook continue to be a top target. Fish are holding tight to mangrove shorelines, docks, and creek mouths, particularly early in the morning and again late afternoon. Live pilchards and whitebait have been producing the best results, while artificial anglers are finding success with soft plastic paddletails and jerk shads worked slowly along structure.  Redfish have been cruising the flats and potholes around Matlacha Pass. Look for schools pushing water during lower tides. Gold spoons, soft plastics, and live shrimp fished under a popping cork have all been effective. Patience and quiet approaches are key right now.  Seatrout action has been steady, with good numbers coming from grass flats in 3–5 feet of water. Trout are responding well to live shrimp, as well as soft plastics bounced along the bottom during moving water.  Sheepshead are still hanging around structure, docks, and oyster bars. The trouble we encountered with dolphins eating your catch while fishing in the Cayo Casta area. Dolphins are highly intelligent and curious creatures that are attracted to fishing activities and fish in the water. While frustrating, it's important to remember that dolphins are protected marine mammals and pursue fish’s natural behavior. To mitigate this issue and increase your chances of successfully landing your catch, here are a few suggestions:  1. Change fishing location: Dolphins are known to frequent certain areas, so try moving to a different spot where their presence may be less common. 2. Use deterrent devices: Commercial deterrent devices are available, such as underwater noisemakers or electronic repellents, that emit sounds dolphins find unpleasant. These devices may help deter them from approaching your fishing area.   3. Stay vigilant: Keep a close eye on your fishing lines and immediately reel them in as soon as you notice dolphins approaching. Minimizing the time your catch spends in the water can reduce the chances of dolphins intercepting it. It's important to note that dolphins are protected species, and it is illegal to harm or harass them. While it can be challenging to fish in areas with high dolphin activity, respecting and coexisting with these beautiful creatures is essential. Enjoying nature's wonders while minimizing any negative impact is the best approach. 

Spoons can produce fish in various conditions, but it shines in some situations. Along weed lines, mangroves or similar structures should be your first targets, as this is where redfish congregate. Remember, reds travel in groups, so work an area thoroughly for consistent action. Repeated casts to the exact location or the same retrieval path will often produce multiple fish. Gold spoons are best suited for stained or dark water. The same techniques can be used with a silver spoon in cleaner water. The shape of the spoon and hook guard combine to allow the lure to bounce off obstructions like weeds, mangroves, oyster beds, or rocks where other lures might be lost. Erratic action is the key to the spoon’s success. Many anglers cast and pause, allowing the spoon to flutter. If you do not get a hit right off the bat, you have two options for the retrieve. A steady retrieve, varying speed based on conditions, will often draw fish out and even right to the boat. Others prefer to add a twitch to their retrieve, feeling the motion increases. Try or mix it up based on what the fish respond to.

As a full-time charter fishing guide in SWFL, I understand the challenges of choosing which species to pursue when there are so many options. The three main species, redfish, snook, and trout, can be easy to get stuck on, but branching out to other game fish like Spanish mackerel, cobra, and triple tail can make for a rewarding trip. Additionally, there are many opportunities to catch sharks in the harbor, such as black tips, spinner, and bonnet heads. These species can be found in both shallow flats and deeper waters. Boca Grande Pass is known as the Tarpon Capital of the World for several reasons. The #1 reason they are here in such great numbers during the months of May and June is the Hill Tides. The action is steady daily during these months as crabs flush out from the Peace River and Charlotte Harbor to thousands of hungry migratory tarpon. The hill tides are the strongest by far, and crabs blanket the entire pass as they get flushed out to sea. The tarpon goes into a frenzy, smashing crabs on the surface in a fantastic display of nature. If you can fish during these specific dates, your chances of hooking into a silver king are much higher.

The New Jersey Boys had a successful day out on the water! Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and spotted sea trout are all highly sought-after catches and can make for a delicious meal when appropriately prepared. Spotted sea trout can be caught using both artificial lures and live bait such as shrimp. Here are some tips on how to catch them using these methods: Using Artificial Lures: 1. Choose the right lure: Spotted sea trout can be caught using a variety of lures, but some popular options include soft plastic baits, jigs, and topwater lures. Match the color and size of your lure to the local baitfish and the water conditions. 2. Vary your retrieve: Experiment with different retrieve techniques such as slow and steady, fast and erratic, or jerking the lure to mimic a wounded baitfish. 3. Fish near structure: Spotted sea trout often hang out near structures such as oyster beds, rocks, or grassy areas. Cast your lure near these structures and retrieve it slowly to entice a bite. Using Live Shrimp: 1. Rig your bait: Use a popping cork with a small weight and a 1/0 or 2/0 circle hook to rig your live shrimp. Hook the shrimp through the tail or the head, depending on the current and the depth you are fishing. 2. Fish in the right areas: Look for areas with shallow water and grassy or rocky bottoms. Spotted sea trout like to feed in these areas during incoming or outgoing tides. 3. Use a gentle touch: When you feel a bite, resist the urge to set the hook immediately. Instead, let the fish take the bait and run with it for a few seconds before slowly reeling in the slack and gently setting the hook. Remember to check your local regulations on catch limits and size limits before fishing for spotted sea trout. Good luck!

Red tide can harm marine life, including fish, so it's essential to take precautions and follow local guidelines when fishing during a red tide event. Make sure to clean and properly prepare your catch before consuming it, and be aware of any warnings or closures in the area. Congratulations on your successful fishing trip!

Several knots can be used to tie braid line to a leader line, but two popular options are the "Double Uni knot" and the "FG knot". Here's how to tie them:
1. Double Uni Knot:
Step 1: Take the end of your braided line and fold it over itself to make a double line.
Step 2: Make a loop with the doubled line and pass the end of the leader line through the loop.
Step 3: Make six turns with the leader line around the double line and bring the end back through the loop.
Step 4: Moisten the knot and tighten by pulling on both lines.
2. FG Knot:
Step 1: Take the end of your braided line and pass it through the center of a hollow section of the leader line.
Step 2: Make at least 10 wraps around the doubled leader line and braided line, moving towards the end of the leader line.
Step 3: Pass the end of the braided line back through the hollow section of the leader line in the opposite direction from which it came.
Step 4: Moisten the knot and pull both ends to tighten, making sure the wraps are snug and evenly distributed.
Both knots provide a strong connection between the braid line and the leader line and are relatively easy to tie once you get the hang of them. It's important to test the knot before fishing to ensure that it is secure and won't fail under the pressure of a fighting fish.

Also, Bluefish, pufferfish, and ladyfish are often considered bycatch were caught. It's always exciting to catch a variety of species while fishing. We had a fun and safe day on the water!

Sheepsheads are a famous catch for their hard fighting and delicious taste. They are commonly found in saltwater environments near structures such as rocks, jetties, and artificial reefs.

Sheepshead fishing in North Captiva is a great way to spend a day. The area is known for its abundance of Sheepshead, which can be found in the shallow waters around the island. Sheepshead is a popular game fish, and it can be caught using a variety of methods. Live bait such as shrimp, crabs, and fiddler crabs are all effective for catching Sheepshead. Artificial lures such as jigs and spoons can also target these fish. When fishing for Sheepshead, it is important to use light tackle and small hooks so the fish can be released unharmed after being caught. Additionally, paying attention to the tide and current when fishing in this area is essential, as these factors can affect where the fish are located. With patience and practice, anglers can have a successful day of Sheepshead fishing in North Captiva!

Snook fishing in Matlacha is best done during the spring, summer, and early fall. During this time, snook is likely to be found in the shallow grass flats, mangrove shorelines, and near oyster bars. Anglers can use live bait such as shrimp, small crabs, and finger mullet to target snook in Matlacha. Artificial lures such as jigs, topwater baits, plugs, and soft plastics can also be effective. When casting your lure, it’s important to remember that snooks are sight feeders and can be easily spooked by a loud retrieve or lure. So, it’s important to remember to cast in the direction of open water and to approach them carefully. As with all fishing, it’s essential to observe the regulations and local bag limits when snook fishing.

During the winter, fishing for spotted sea trout in Cayo Costa is best done in deeper water near grass beds, sand/mud bottoms, and oyster bars. Spotted sea trout usually feed on shrimp, baitfish, and small crabs. Live bait such as finger mullet, small shrimp, and jigs can all be effective for catching winter trout. Rigging a popping cork with live bait can also provide a good option. Artificial lures such as spoons and soft plastics can also be helpful, mainly if the trout are not actively feeding. If you plan to fish offshore, paying attention to weather and sea conditions is essential, as they can change quickly in winter. It is also important to remember to observe the local and state regulations regarding fishing in Cayo Costa.

Fish were hooked on live shrimp suspended under a popping cork. Unfortunately, the recent cold fronts brought a drop in water temperature. While this may turn off many species, it might be just what we need to boost sheepshead fishing over the upcoming weeks.

Today, I was captain for hire on Todd's new 2022 Grady White 257 Fisherman, along with his daughter Erica. We ran downriver to picnic island and then up to Matlacha. We caught a bunch of big whitebaits and floated the flats for trout. After catching multiple trout and one keeper, we decided to shoot over to the pier

The weather was perfect, and the fish were hungry! Seeking opponents with perpetual appetites should never pass up the chance to engage the jack crevalle. But think about it: Is an excellent fight any less of a great battle just because it came from an unexpected opponent? Well, some days, the fish you want may not cooperate. It’s that moment of realization that often spins 180 degrees on our view of the jack crevalle. No doubt, what the jack lacks in looks and taste, it more than compensates with aggression and rod-bending ability.

When temperatures are cooler look for this bite to extend further into the day. They will also do well on fresh bait such as Mullet or Shrimp either set up under a cork or tipped on a jig.

You will find these fish at their best around the inlets. The smaller fish and slot-sized fish will typically make for a fairly reliable target around the shallower creeks. Fish the structured shorelines and oyster bars in these areas. As fresh bait is often key for getting them, you can also expect to find fish around the pods of Mullet that are throughout the area. Try to fish the moving tides for best results as the Redfish favor moving Water. The Bulls prefer large, live Mullet or whole Crabs.

Overwhelmed

The rainy season starts to wind down, and cold fronts start to roll in, but water temperatures remain nice and warm for Redfish and Black Drum to make their comeback right in time for fall. I had a fantastic time with three amazing families last week, showing them what inshore fishing is all about.  The weather was perfect, and the fish were hungry! 

What a day! It started a little slow as the Spotted trout are moving out for the season, but they still managed a couple of keepers in the first hour around Charlotte Harbor. Then we picked up a nice Red Drum that gave us a severe battle and was the big fish of the day! Then we hit a couple of hot spots for Mangrove snapper to fill our bag for the day! Finally, throw a handful of snook in the mangroves and push the count to about 25 fish for the day! Awesome action and entertainment today!

Today, we caught redfish, Snook, Snappers, and Seatrout in Pine Island Sound from south Sanibel Island to the northern end of Captiva Island.  I also managed some nice upper-slot Redfish in the Pineland area of Pine Island.  Redfish today wanted pins.

Snook are still plenty along the Fort Myers and Cape Coral shorelines and mangos.  

Redfish are here and showing up in good numbers in Pine Island Sound from south Sanibel Island to the northern end of Captiva Island.  I also managed some nice upper-slot Redfish in the Pineland area of Pine Island and the southern islands of Matlacha.  Go-to baits are pins, white bait, tread fins, and shrimp.

Snook are still plenty along the Fort Myers and Cape Coral shorelines and mangos.  The later afternoon high tides turned on the bite!
